Over the centuries, various theological positions have been adopted, usually focusing on one or another aspect of the foretellings of Christ's return.
Amazingly, however, very few fail to take in to account the actual record in the scripture of how 'second coming' took place in Jesus' time.
It's there in scripture, in plain sight, but it requires a spiritual awakeness to recognize it.
The israelites of Jesus time were always expecting the Messiah, so how could they fail to recognize Jesus? Because the prophets had foretold that Elijah would return before the coming of the Lord. They missed the return of Elijah, and so found it extremely hard to recognize or even consider that Jesus was the foretold Messiah.
