I believe the avant garde came about sooner than that, it can be traced back to the beginning of modernism in the mid 19th century. It wasn't a political movement but a creative one.

Guy De Borde operated in the mid 20th C, he invented along with others the theory of semiotics

I mention Situationism (of which De Borde was considered a head) which is the vehicle for semiotics and other philosophies of Cult-ure.

Avant garde is as old as history.

The gala in Babylon.

Theater in Greece and Rome.

The King's Herald.

Historic Literature and Prose, religious writings.
