Just a theory, but I got the feeling that part of the inadequate "training" the cannon fodder received is to show what happens if they have second thoughts of the whole arrangement.
They are also probably still too shell shocked about the situation to figure out that turning against the slaughterhouse commanders is an option.
Why dont they just turn around and shoot their commanders?
