Totally fake. If the engines were really at max for takeoff, those people would not be able to withstand the force. There are lots of differences in the plane itself, but that one detail made it clear to me this was fake back then.

At the time, they showed a video of this plane taking off with the people still hanging on and ultimately falling to their death. Here's the best video that I could find...
