Jonathan Swift, 1729: "A Modest Proposal"... a satire about eating babies.

I just got to thinking... how far back does the baby-eating go? And, did his idea for his satire come from dark legends/rumors/truths?

People were horrified by the satire.

Anyway, it just popped into my mind. Any Jonathan Swift experts able to share any insights?

No great insight, but my English class in high school studied Swift and read/discussed A Modest Proposal, which has raised similar questions for me during my Awakening over the past couple years as you are asking. Did he know more than he was letting on?
