Jonathan Swift, 1729: "A Modest Proposal"... a satire about eating babies.

I just got to thinking... how far back does the baby-eating go? And, did his idea for his satire come from dark legends/rumors/truths?

People were horrified by the satire.

Anyway, it just popped into my mind. Any Jonathan Swift experts able to share any insights?

Dates back as far as humans were on this earth.

FWIW I read Swift's modest proposal and wrote an English essay in the 1970's while a Freshman in College. It was a modest proposal regarding the Vietnam war (turning most of it into a parking lot) for when Richard Nixon opened up our relationship with China by having us play ping pong. I can't even remember all the additional things I added but once I got on the topic I went a bit wild with it. Anyway it was all tongue in cheek, of course. But my English teacher loved it.

I was given an A+ for that essay for creativity.
