Probably because many of our (speaking of Americans) ancestors left their home countries with basically nothing but the clothes on their backs when they first came to America.

They came here penniless. This is the type of story many Americans are accustomed to hearing. How our ancestors came over here with nothing to live the American dream.

But of course, that was back when immigration laws were almost nonexistent. Especially for Caucasians.
