I hear you, but I don't follow you. From Trump's own attorney, he has never had that ability before. So I am not understanding the "why this time" part.
The reason he can at all, is because he is a defendant. And the reason he can bring up 2020 matters, as one example, is because that is what the DOJ states their case is based on. That he lied about the results of the election and "tried to overturn it".

a. Wife never went to a hockey game with me before, despite numerous invites.
b. Finally, this season, she agreed to go to a game.
c. Why this time, and not the other times?
Now Trump:
a. He's never had the ability before to subpoena.
b. Finally, this time, he will have that ability.
c. Why this time, and not the other times?
All the other times he was indicted for 2020 election crimes? Isn't this the very first time?
The courts all rejected his 2020 election law suits when he brought them. He’s never had the opportunity. Now the feds are coming to him.
What they don’t realize is, this no fly. It’s a centipede with two hollow fangs.
