When real wars occur the rate of advance is amazing. Consider what the British RAF were using prior to WW2. They had the Gloster Gladiator fighter and the Handley Page Heyford bomber.
The Gladiator was the first RAF fighter to have a totally enclosed cockpit and the Heyford was its last biplane bomber. The RAF had a jet before the war ended.
