Think about it. 650 planes is not an unreasonable number.
A Boeing 777 cargo plane, a cheap and ubiquitous option in the air logistics industry, can accommodate around 20 tons of heavy palleted cargo per flight.
I don't know what kind of planes they used, but using this as a benchmark, that would be around 13,000 tons of gold. The US is supposed to have at least 8000 tons of gold, so this isn't far off.
Maybe 650 was excessive or they didn't have the proper gear to take full advantage of the cargo capacity. Or maybe there was additional cargo on those flights other than just the gold. Or maybe they weren't using 777's and had a plane with a lower weight limit.
In any case, the number of plane loads is completely believable. I probably would have probably guessed around 300 if asked, but I can accept 650 is the true number.
