This sounds like it is linked to the BRICS meeting. If so, then that meeting is hardly likely to launch a new gold-backed (retail) currency.
I think at this time the most they are likely to agree upon is a gold-brokered basket of commodities/currencies that they can use for trading between BRICS partners.
However, even that will send shock-waves through the market, maybe enough to topple a couple of banks, who knows?
