Diesel was... an engine. The engine was originally designed to run on plentiful, renewable vegetable or legume oils (corn, soy, peanut, etc.), and its invention made fuel cheap and abundant for as long as humanity can still farm. However, propaganda kept us on gasoline - because important people make their money in the gasoline industry. Then, regulations drove changes to the diesel engine so that it requires special, colored, approved, taxed 'diesel fuel' and can no longer run on veggie oil without significant modifications - and these are fairly recent changes; there are cars from the 80's that will run great on veggie oils without any modification at all.
