We have one of the largest military bases in the world on Oahu less than an hour flight time from Maui and yet no military aircraft in the area assisting this disaster. Doesn't add up.
Like there wasn't a single fucking ship nearby with water pumps on it?
Maui has a USCG compliment of 25 personnel (including administrators). A budget of $87,000/yr. It looks like the few boats they have were busy rescuing people from the water.
The water depth around Lahaina maxes out at 35 feet until the shelf drops off quite a ways offshore (typical for leeward side of the islands - that's why you see most surfers during competitions getting hauled by jet skis to the far outside reefs). Any naval boats that might have happened to be in area wouldn't have been able to get in close enough to use the water pumps. Since there is not any large boat harbors on Maui, there is a very limited active naval presence. Even cruise ships hang out off the shelf and transport passengers to Lahaina via tenders (small passenger boats).
I see, perfect target. Thank you for the insight friend. I know so little about Hawaii it's probably a little offensive LOL

This is exactly what my struggle is with this entire story..
If you have ever landed on Maui's only airport, you'd know why military aircraft can't land there. Especially true when "hurricane force" winds are present. That drop in to Maui is a shear white knuckler. It has two runways and is considered one of the smallest airports in the US.
Also, sea travel is not like travelling between the Caribbean islands. The channels between the islands are treacherous. During a hurricane, suicide.
