Prior to recent years and Joes 87,000 agents. The IRS did maintain a force of armed agents.
For the most part they served as Security at IRS facilities/offices. And some would be dispatched to supervise or lead field investigations. Primarily though as far as I was aware they relied on State and Local police. Or other Federal Agencies to do the “kick in the door” parts while they sat back and did the number crunching.
