Eleven days ago, we sent these questions to Western Digital’s head of PR and published them publicly on The Verge:
- Why are these drives still on sale?
- Will you offer free data recovery services to affected customers? When?
- Are you proactively warning customers and retailers who have already purchased these drives that significant data loss is possible?
- If not, why not?
- What, exactly, is going wrong with these drives?
- How did this happen?
What’s the fuss? For months, the company has been laughably silent about how its pricey portable SanDisk Extreme SSDs might lose all your data. It happened to my colleague Vjeran Pavic twice. It happened to Ars Technica. It happened to PetaPixel.
Months after our inquiries, Western Digital continues to sell these drives due to deep discounts, fake Amazon reviews, and issues with Google Search that rank favorable results far higher than warnings about potential failures.
. . . There is one possible reason Western Digital is finally speaking up and yet saying nothing: the company just got sued. As The Register reports, California resident Nathan Krum has filed a prospective class action lawsuit, citing breach of contract, fraudulent and unfair business practices, and many other claims. Krum is suing over both the SanDisk Extreme drive itself and damages for any data lost. You can read the full complaint at the bottom of this story.

A massive blackout is being predicted. I think it’s imminent. My sister printed all the Q drops. I might start printing as well. I think they are going to scrub the internet. Citizens in Lahaina are lined up to get permission slips to leave their neighborhood. They have no internet access. It’s already a 15-minute city. Wtf?! And now hurricane Hilary?! Twilight zone.
This is the same as smart devices.
Any hard drive that comes with software or some kind of "mini OS" on it that you can't get rid of to make it just a normal old data storage device is intentionally designed to be able to control what you save on it.
Think of it like a "smart closet". It can get rid of things it doesn't think you should have.
AND that Ladies and Gentlemen is my #1 REASON FOR NOT USING SSD ON MY SERVER...too damn dangerous for ANY DATA STORAGE and besides, I have my 6 WD HDD in their OWN BAYS...with a fail over stripping so that NOTHING gets lost...
And I want to thank the pedes for bringing this IMPORTANT FUNCTION out on these SSD drives...even though my Supermicro X-11SRA-F MB has the slot, ME NOT PLUGGING IN SLOT!!!!!! (keep a clean mind would ya' 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣)
wait, so every SSD has that capability? thought it was just WD
Dia-freaking-bolical.
Solid state drives are NOT meant for archiving and long term data storage. Without power, they will lose all data in a few years. Use the older platter drives or even tape drives. Use RAID to have real-time mirror backups in case of disc failure. I have two disks(raid mirror) at work, and at home. Theory is my work and my house shouldn’t burn down at same time, so one set of discs will survive.
I've had nothing but trouble with WD HD's in the past losing/erasing important data.
I made the switch to the Samsung SSD T series a few years ago and have never looked back.
JUST a LIL' FYI.... I have a WD HDD that I bought and have used since ----- 2007!!!!! AND it's still truckin'!!!!!
