Is there such a thing as a mom and pop grocery store?
When I was young (late 50s/early 60s) we had a corner store about the size of a small house. Half of the first floor was the store, the other half was where the owners lived.
There were these neighborhood stores around town. All gone now, replaced with quick trips, 7-11, Casey's, etc.
Some of these "convenience" stores, though national/regional chains, may be locally owned, but how do you know? And is supporting them really supporting the conglomerate above them?
Farmer's markets are great, but are only available the warm half of the year.
There aren't any farmer's markets near me but there are a bunch of little stands people set up to sell fruits and vegetables. Boy are they PROUD of their stuff. I've never seen things so expensive - they are worse than Whole Foods. I've bit the bullet a few times and tried buying from them and their stuff was mostly flavorless. Too bad - I love farmer's markets and will pay a little more for good flavorful food but I don't have that option nearby.
