I think what you are referring to is known as a firestorm. In short, its large updrafts created by large fires. In WWII, incendiary bombing caused many towns to experience tropical storm strength winds as the intense heat caused the air to rush upward, and surrounding cool air to rush back in to replace it.

This article is absurd. It ignores the fact that high winds in Lahaina are caused by air rushing between the two mountains.
