Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evoloving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
Need to find a home for a special needs German Shepherd. He needs a larger person experienced with the breed who wants a constant companion and has no other animals. He's approx 1.5-2 yrs old and neutered.
I actually posted about him several months ago. He belongs to a friend of a friend in GA. I'm in AZ. I found him a home in AZ but those people want to send him back to GA. He was abused as a pup, rescued by someone who has no idea what she's doing, tied up, crated. Wants to be in charge and guard everything. That owner got bitten when she picked him up by his front legs to drag him into his crate. After that he came to a family in AZ but he doesn't get along with their other dogs and they can't give him the attention and exercise he needs so he's been destructive.
No rescue we've found will help either because they're full or because he's been aggressive. Doesn't matter that that was due to mishandling.
Any ideas? I don't know where to post since the dog is currently in AZ but may or may not be heading back to GA soon. So could be adopted by the right person in any state if transport can be arranged.
I should make it clear he loves people and loves affection. But he knows no boundaries and has a dominant personality in need of a job.
I would keep researching for rescues, breed appropriate. Biting at the hands and arms of someone dragging him by the front legs is defensive, not aggression, any dog would do that. I would just keep trying, he will need a person who loves the breed and knows what to do, the fact that he is friendly is a big plus, I hate crates, HATE THEM. They are so misused, I also hate that people get dogs and then think they do not have to spend a good deal of time with them, as if by magic and a manual they can "train" the dog. You may have to go through many "normie" channels, but keep looking, GSD's are strong but so willing to please and thrive on positive reenforcement. Sorry to hear he has been nuetered at such a young age, it does not help with aggression, often makes them more aggresive, and they need all their hormones functioning till 2 years of age for proper bone growth and health. Keep trying.
The whole situation is awful. And now he is across the country from the woman who has no idea how to handle him, but at least loves him. I'm so angry at the people who currently have him. I mentioned him to them, gave him his owner's #, then found out they were picking him up after they were already on their way! Hello??? Are you taking your most dominant dog along to see if they can get along? No. Are you willing to pay the right trainer with the most experience? No. How will he be exercised? Play. No no no! Argh. Why can't people handle the most basic communication?
Wish I could help; had 2 rescue Alsatians, they were wonderful. Hope he finds his forever home. We have a rehoming organisation for Alsatians in the UK - maybe there is one in the US as well? Check with local animal shelters and similar groups.
Maybe you can post this on the main GAW page to get more traction. There's also Reddit and GAB.
I didn't think of GAB, thank you
