My wife started with a new gynecologist late 90's. First thing he did was check vitamin D levels and started her on the Vitamin D3. He does this for all his patients, and she has been on it ever since with levels checked whenever she had blood testing. He is the only doctor she or I have ever been a patient of that had ever recommended that.
My endocrinologist is the same. Only doctor I know that checks all of his patient's vit D levels. He was trained originally in Russia so never became a western medical meat robot. I'm guessing that has something to do with it.

I should ask mine to test for that.
Quest has a test for this.. Don't need a doc order. Just sign up through site. I had mine done as a fitness package they offered.
