Official diplomats receive reciprocal immunity from the laws of other nations. They do this to ensure their own diplomats are safe. This benefit is usually extended to family and embassy staff. Basically people who get the brown passport from their host country.

In egregious cases the home country may waive immunity. In other instances the host country will expel diplomatic staff. Typically misdemeanors are just ignored.

To receive immunity, I believe diplomats have to be officially received. Wouldn’t that be crazy if this was a sting operation? That satanic witch could get herself into a lot of trouble.
