I've always questioned the whole "calls from the planes" part of the stories from that day. I didn't think cell phones worked when up in the air on jets, at least not back in 2001. Can anyone provide a reasonable explanation of how it could have been possible back then?

And, Question #2.
Why have we never heard any calls from the planes before the hijackings took place?
Such as, "Hi Grandpa, this is Cindy. I'm calling you from an airplane." Or, "Hi Boss, I'll have those reports on your desk in the morning."
Last contacts that would have been shared with the world.
Not one.
