I've always questioned the whole "calls from the planes" part of the stories from that day. I didn't think cell phones worked when up in the air on jets, at least not back in 2001. Can anyone provide a reasonable explanation of how it could have been possible back then?

Don't have the time to read all the texts, but, by 9/11/2001, all the airphones had been removed or disabled on the American Airlines jets. The only way mobile calls could have been made, was if the jets were still or back on the ground somewhere when the calls were made. Also, around 15 minutes into the Boston flight, whoever had control of the cockpit inadvertently made a P.A. to the passengers on the Air Traffic Control frequency. The person stated "sit down, be quiet, we're going back to the airport."
