Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evoloving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
The real jury system is one where the defendant has to bring with him 12 of his own peers, and the prosecution has to convince them that he is guilty. Not saying that would be a good system, but still far from what we have right now.
I think Trump chose not to have a jury.
I know you can have a jury trial in a civil case in NY. I was a juror on one.
6 jurors and you needed 5 of 6 if I remember correctly.

Yeah, it's his choice to do a jury trial or a bench trial which is just a judge.
The trial part starts next week.
Its actually a Jury Trial it looks like, but he Judge ruled that there are no facts for jury to decide.
Two separate issues.
Bench trial and summary judgment.
The trial is a bench trial not a jury trial. The trial is next week, and we've heard nothing about jury selection.

So the judge is sole finder of fact. It's basically a strategic choice to choose a bench trial.
Both Trump and the AG filed motions for a summary judgment. Trump filed to have the judge dismiss the case entirely
The NY AG was looking to prove 7 things at trial, but asked for partial summary judgment on one issue.
The Judge responded to both petitions in his ruling.

The judge sided with the AG
The trial will be about the 6 remaining things.
You might still have a fighting chance in most places, but you should be even more worried if a judge decides your fate. Anyone who has dealt with family courts will attest to this.
