I don't know if anything changed, but Iran and the Taliban were long standing enemies and after 9/11 they provided a lot of information to the US about Taliban hideouts, because the US had very little solid intel on Afghanistan.

So just to be clear, Iran's been around a long long time. Persia was an empire in antiquity. Iran's border with Iraq was established in the 1600s which was before Iraq existed as it own country.

This was followed by the Pahlavi dynasty who ruled from 1925 to 1979. 2 Shahs who were not from Pahlavi tribe....Pahlavi it turns out is a language, used in Persia before the Muslims took over, so he claimed this as his name to look like he was a part of history.
Now here's the part we've been arguing about. The Pahlavi dynasty like Iran existed before the CIA was even founded, but how they governed changed.
The dynasty ruled Iran for 28 years as a form of constitutional monarchy from 1925 until 1953, and following the overthrow of the democratically elected prime minister, for a further 26 years as a more autocratic monarchy until the dynasty was itself overthrown in 1979.
So Mohammad Reza Pahlavi was the last Shah of Iran, but there had been a bunch previously. Iran was a constitutional monarchy, even before this guy's dad took over as king. Wiki describes it this way

Iran as the name of a land/country is a 1000 years old. This was the name Iranians used with some other variations. Outsiders called it Persia since antiquity. In 1935, the Shah of Iran at the time asked diplomats to begin using Iran as the name. it was still the same country, there had been Shahs in iran for hundreds of years.
The CIA was created in the 1947. The OSS which preceded the CIA was created in 1942.
So no Iran was not created by the CIA.

What you are thinking of, is the 1953 coup in Iran where the US and UK helped overthrow the Prime Minister. Iran still had a Shah or King at the time, son of the guy who made everyone call it Iran and a Prime Minister. Since 1909 Iran was a constitutional Monarchy where the Shah wasn't that strong.
The coup did not CREATE Iran, the borders of Iran have been the same for a while. The Shah was in power, the Pahlavi dynasty started in 1925. What the coup did was make the Shah a dictator and overthrew the civilian side of the government.
And yes, the did lose their power. You must be young if you don't remember the Iranian revolution when the US embassy was overrun and embassy were taken hostage for 444 days.

Iran finally gets involved in the 1980's after the Iranian revolution in 1979 and Israel's invasion into Lebanon in 1982 against the PLO (Lebanon has a large Shiite population in the south.)
Even support for Hamas is supercomplicated. Hamas is a SUNNI Islamist organization coming out of the Muslim Brotherhood. Saudi Arabis used to supply 50% of their funding. Egypt was a big supporter to.
Saudi Arabia stopped funding them after the US urged them to after 9/11. Iran and Syria then stepped up their funding.....but during the Syrian civil war, Hamas supported the Sunni side and Iran and Syria cut funding. Iran stopped supporting the civilian side cutting out 90 million from what it used to give from $150, to 60 million, but that 60 were to military efforts.
The most reliable states who support Hamas are Qatar and Turkey. Both Sunni.

my question is why the intelligence was not on this. Mossad is considered the state of the art for intelligence.
I believe that this would be considered Domestic and thus it would be Shin Bet the internal security service, not Mossad. I just saw an interview where the person suggested there was probably an intelligence compromise....either Israel had informants who were really double agents for Hamas or that they compromised a secure communication channel like China did in the last decade.
If this happened they could be feed false information into the system and utterly fool the Israelis.
