Most of the Bible is the word of man, not the word of God. So that doesn't really touch on why it's so controversial.

I don't think it's controversial. It is an opinion of one man and it is the age old division tactic of Satan. We are all made in the image of God and we are to help each other. No one deserves to be treated as less than someone else.
