Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evoloving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
Eye roll 🙄 I don't care for reality tv but when I've watched that swamp show down south where they catch gators I'm thankful for the subtitles🤣 It's funny how different we all sound. Have you heard high tider's talk on the coast? Experts say it's the closest thing to old English (British) accent. I go to the coast occasionally and can spot them in a heartbeat. It's my favorite accent of all time. Well other than those Scottish guys😉 I only see Jamie Frazier.
My accent is just flat as a flitter. I do my best to dress it up some when I’m on the phone with customers. I can do it but I have to think about it as I’m talking. My ex father in law had the coastal British accent. He was a genius too, knew everything. I loved to just listen to him talk even though half the time it flew right over my head. I’d just nod and smile. 🥴
I don't even try to "fix" my accent. It's who I am! Most of the time when I travel, especially up north, people love the accent. All I hear is Andy Griffin or Gomer Pyle. Your x father in law sounds like an interesting character. That coastal accent is slowly fading as the old timers die out and more outsiders are moving in the area. I still remember the first time I heard it in the 80s (back when I was single and teenager😉). This guy had a red line across his neck. Nosy me asked what happened. "I ran into a waaare" wish I could type it as I heard it. After me questioning him "what's a waaare?" He said, what you hang clothes on" That's when I truly discovered high tider talk.
I watched the Jeff Foxworthy videos and laughed til I hurt. Been a while since I had watched him. Right on target. When my ex husband was in the Air Force we were stationed in South Dakota. Those people had a blast with us. They would say just talk, and we would say about what, they would say anything. I would say now we are not circus monkeys, we have feelings too. 😂🤡🤣
