Don't forget the attack happened on yon kippor, a historically low number of troops would be on duty due to the celebrations.
Similar to launching an attack on Christmas day.

Disagree. Religiously significant holidays should have the military on high alert.
I'm thinking back to Russian independence day or whatever that Russian specific holiday is called where that was definitely the case where Russian soldiers at the front were on high alert and the fighting got pretty heavy that day too
I agree that is what should be done, but history does not bear out.
Numerous times, especially on holidays truces have been broken, surprise attacks launched, and the like.
A sad state.
