Springfield didn't do shit to save it. Look at what Springfield used to be to understand how much it is responsible for its own demise. At the turn of the century it was the most profitable and prestigious place to live. Manufacturing jobs, Indian motorcycle, Westinghouse, Spalding, Smith and Wesson, etc. Corruption, shit politicians and bad policies destroyed the entire region. It breaks my heart because it has fallen so far from what it used to be and what might have been if it hadn't had bad leadership from the 1960s onwards. Now a major employer is a Chinese railcar manufacturer and they only hire people they import from China, not even the locals. The politicians sold out the region so hard that even a casino can't thrive. The environment is toxic to business. I don't see a way to fix it at this point.
I literally have family that work for Smith and Wesson, they are leaving because of the Commonwealth of MA, not because of Springfield. They never wanted to actually have to leave.
It was Mass not Springfield that did it.
