Dating myself- I know curriculm changed after 89- I graduated, all my siblings younger- when I saw new history books, I could see differences...family are educators, and we discussed at length. Remember that attitude of live and let live? Some in my family screamed "slippery slope!" while others said it wasnt such a big deal- we would still teach the right nuances of history----Yuri Bezmenov was talking and lots of us were listening- I had high school teachers that gave a shit and weren't too far removed from WW2, Vietnam, Iran Contras, etc. they made sure we all learned about the shitty outcomes of Communism- this was public school in the Seattle metro area- 1989 was a million years ago...
Look at us sitting at the bottom of that "slippery slope" right now :-(
I'm from the same era and I remember asking my HS History teacher why we spent so much time on the Ming, Song and Tang dynasties (memorizing all the names and dates for months) but never touched WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam or the Cuban Missile Crisis. She didn't have a good answer back then and didn't seem to question the curriculum.

When communists kill, the media and history books look the other way.
