He did say "synthetic food... synthetic meat" but I wonder what is their real objective.
The fake meats you see (used to see, they are not selling so well) in supermarkets are a distraction. They are aimed at animal-meat eaters who for some reason want to cut down; to save money, to lower cholesterol, to save the planet from cow farts, whatever. I am not saying those aspirations make sense, just that is the marketing people's target demographic for selling their fake meat. You may not agree with fake meat but at least it is made from natural foods such as soy or other beans. And yes soy despite it now being an insult word is a natural plant and a mainstay crop of American farming.
*The actual problem with synthetic food is stuff that looks and tastes real but is not. *
I visited the US last month and I bought a "South West Salad" which had a variety of leaves, some tiny corn chip things, and dressing. Looked delicious but I read the packet closely and it told me in plain words that it contained genetically modified ingredients. IN A SALAD! And no indication which of the salad bits was the problem so you could at least pick it out and avoid.
Would not be allowed in my country. I thought the EU (of which Italy is a member) would also already not allow it, so I really don't know what Italy is supposed to be saying on this.
