He succeeded because he didn't play by their rules. He bought and sold, worked, arranged, dealed, etc behind the scenes and without permission from "the system", bartering and trading based on legit needs and supply and demand, not from some government quota. Richard actions were the definition of unfettered capitalism, and the entire time his captor "Nikki" didn't understand how he could do so much and be successful while bucking the system. He freed himself, not by overpowering, but by rising above. And sharing a great awakening when the time was right:
"Your life is yours and yours alone. Rise up and live it."
