I just posted this in another thread on the topic of "stollen:"
I just had this random, maybe not random thought: I was taught in first grade phonics that double consonants following a vowel make the vowel short sound. So 'stollen" would be pronounced STALIN. (Short "o" sound, not long "o" sound.)

Interdasting.
I was taught that rule too.
According to that rule, adding another "l" WOULD change the pronunciation so it evoked the Russian fascist monster, in commie camo, Stalin.
