When I was a lot younger, I was told that it was money we paid for people's loyalty to the US. By buying off entire countries, we were stopping the soviets in their tracks and bringing peace to the world.

I didn't believe it then, and I still don't believe it.

I think the truth is that the American people are the only people in the world that can create wealth, and we are being controlled by people who don't care about us but are treating us like a cash cow.
