When I was a lot younger, I was told that it was money we paid for people's loyalty to the US. By buying off entire countries, we were stopping the soviets in their tracks and bringing peace to the world.

I think the truth is that the American people are the only people in the world that can create wealth, and we are being controlled by people who don't care about us but are treating us like a cash cow.
Better way to ask that excellent question is WHY are they allowed to give our tax $ away in that fashion? Have we been that brainwashed that we've not pushed back in unison until now?
You voted for them to represent you, and you are regularly offered a vote to replace them if you don't like the manner in which they do it. It's a perfect system. So why do they keep giving our money away? Either people do vote for it, or the vote is broken.
We don't owe money to anybody. The $33 Trillion is just money they haven't collected from taxpayers yet. The government uses a credit card that belongs to 330 million Americans. They have as much authority to use it as my first 2 wives did when I was divorcing them, but I was still liable to pay them off.
