We may marvel at the Northern Lights, but that same solar storm energy could one day create what one researcher described as an "internet apocalypse."

Only if they are connected to long wires, such as electric lines, TV cable, or long antennas. Nuclear EMP will affect even isolated electronics unless they are in a Faraday cage. I have my smaller extra equipment wrapped in layers of alternating plastic and aluminum foil.
