Not all world fair structures are "useless"... the Eiffel Tower is still in use and I've been to the top of it, it offers a glorious view of Paris in 360 degrees. The Knoxville is still in use, although it sat idle a few years after the fair. It's been used as a restaurant but I'm not sure what's going on there nowadays. It's recently been repainted to its original color blue. I don't get downtown very much these days, I tend to avoid crowds as a survival technique.
I know... but today, try to imagine the skyline of Paris without the Eiffel Tower. It's so iconic that by merely showing 3 seconds of the Eiffel Tower and playing a little accordion music, a movie can tell you that the scene is set in Paris.
Just try removing the tower today... Paris would be in an uproar.
I agree. It might be useless, but the Eiffel Tower is part of the Paris skyline. In fact, the tower will be in the background for Olympic Beach Volleyball.

The Eiffel Tower was considered useless to the locals though this was right after the World's Fair.
