Some Politicians and Japanese Bureaucrats have been known to kill themselves after instances like this. Or just from embarrassing mistakes. Sometimes they aren’t even the one who committed the criminal offense or stupid mistake. Just someone who whether directly or indirectly felt like it had shamed or dishonored themselves by association.

There’s been several reports of Transportation Supervisors for instance. Killing themselves after junior staff made mistakes that caused lengthy delays in Train Schedules.

It’s a cultural holdover from the days of the Samurai. For the most part. The actually killing yourself but is comparatively rare in modern day. But still happens on occasion. Usually most consider resigning their positions as satisfactory atonement for disgrace or dishonor.
