The last time he was elected, he had to share power with Benny Ganz, a pretty staunch Leftist. And of course, his most recent drama with trying to change the rules of the Israeli courts to shift power away from them and to the electorate has been... contentious. His approval ratings were poor heading into this attack. There's some merit to saying he really needed a unifying crisis when he got one. That's also why many think he knew the attack was coming and didn't stop it so he'd have an excuse to divert attention from his political troubles and clean out Gaza at the same time.
