I understand the point. Countering the point, having an alternate perspective or sharing another way to view it does not indicate or equate to lack of understanding.
In this case the point is some sports fans take it to extremes and don't pay enough attention to, or don't get as emotionally involved in, politics as they do in sports.
My counterpoint is that literally everything gets taken to extremes at times by someone or other; and that sports fans are using sports to involve their mind the game strategy, player attributes, the beauty of the human body in motion, etc., as a means of ESCAPE from the constant onslaught of stress and misery that is politics.
Also athletics elevates the human spirit above our ancestral drive to fight and kill rival tribes on the battlefield; and it sublimates those skills and competitive urges into a non-lethal game enjoyable to themselves and spectators. That is a mental, spiritual, and psychological good IMHO.
