NATO isn't just for defense of Western Europe anymore. Anybody remember Kosovo? Or the arming and continued keeping of Ukraine on life support? Russia appears to be uninterested in occupying the Western non-Russian part of Ukraine, much less drive on to the Rhine.
Imagine how many billions the US would save by closing many of these bases....
