"Helter Skelter" is the book written by the DA that prosecuted Manson and his 'family'. Quite frightening stuff as I recall. Read that book about 1975. Connects Manson to the music industry via Beach Boys and the Beatles.
I read an article ages ago that claimed that Roman Polanski had quite the collection of "films" that he had taken at his home, with various upscale California people - not just musicians/movie stars but also some political types as well. They'd set up a party with lots of booze and drugs and then, when people got loose enough, he'd film them.
The article speculated that that was one of the big reasons that the Family was sent to that house - they killed people who were close to Polanski because he was becoming a problem. The fact that the murders drove spikes into the Hippie movement (and created a huge climate of fear) was probably a secondary benefit.
