"Helter Skelter" is the book written by the DA that prosecuted Manson and his 'family'. Quite frightening stuff as I recall. Read that book about 1975. Connects Manson to the music industry via Beach Boys and the Beatles.

There is an interesting book out there called "Inside the LC: The Strange but Mostly True Story of Laurel Canyon and the Birth of the Hippie Generation" which talks about this. It's a fun read.
