Bad advise. Even a shot defeated by armor will knock the absolute wind out of you if it's a rifle round. Practically all center-fire rifle rounds defeat iiia soft armor. Steel plates are extremely heavy, and fatigue you quickly during prolonged use, so I doubt they'll use those. I've worn them on multi-day rucks and steel plates are terrible for anything other than sentry duty, vehicle duty, and weight training. The lightweight plastic level III stuff is decent these days and affordable. The newer cheaper level III stuff is going to be the most common armor threat. A 20" barrel shooting m193 5.56 will defeat level III plastic and steel armor at point blank range from velocity alone. Level iv ceramics can only stop one shot point blank before being rendered useless in the hit zone. That one hit might as well be a 100mph pitch and with the speed of follow up shots, you've got them. TLDR, the head is a small, fast moving, difficult target and nobody has good aim under pressure. Point blank against an armored opponent, simply dumping multiple rounds center mass will defeat them. You can pop off 5 rounds from any AR in about a second. If shit goes down, stay indoors where you know the environment. Nothing beats actual combat training in a gun fight and 20" barreled ARs are everywhere. Learn to fight at night. It's extremely difficult and most likely when threats arrive.

I love 308. Problem is, most folks run 147-155 m80 ball on the cheap end these days. These can't defeat the multi hit ability of modern level III plastic armor. Granted, you should still be mag dumping a close range target till the threat stops, but 223 will be easier to penetrate after multiple hits than 308. Velocity kills armor and 308 lacks that ability unless you're able to score 30 cal penetrators.
For 223/556, I can assure you that 27 grains of CFE223 behind a Hornady 53gn vmax going 3400 fps defeats any level III. I've tried it. I'm sure similar magic can be had with the 125 gn 308 bullets if u can push them to 3200fps or more. But, since most folks don't reload, m193 5.56 out of a 20" AR is a known armor killer at point blank range.

But you are on point with you're analysis...however, reloading can make a big difference within a few grains which means, one had better have an extra barrel lying around after the testing...
NOTE: Too many reloaders try to get the max out of the barrel/round which is good but I like to work up the rounds SLOWLY...that is why the reload.
Don't forget, powders very well do make a difference BUT that is another story...
