The OP's article provides poor details. According to this article, It is the IRS going after him, not the State of California. Hunter just happened to be a CA resident during the years the IRS caught him money laundering, hence the Federal court in CA had the jurisdiction:: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/hunter-biden-indicted-tax-crimes-special-counsel/
This is where I Think you have it wrong (the rest is spot on). If Gavin wants to ultimately be POTUS he absolutely should go after Hunter any way he can - as long as it results in federal charges and not state. Gavin could order his government to help the feds with any investigations.
If Hunter gets convicted on federal charges, Joe is absolutely stupid enough to pardon Hunter (remember POTUS can only pardon federal charges - not state) and end up being basically forced to step down. Enter Gavin.
That is an interesting theory. I hadn't considered it, and it is certainly worth mulling over. That said, I still think that people within the State of California were in cahoots with Hunter, and I don't think Gavin would risk exposing people in his own government. But Gavin's hubris is off the charts, so maybe he truly believes he can pin all the blame on Hunter without anyone looking into Newsom's government.

Trust me, Gavin would NEVER go after The Big Guy.
Thx fren this is critical to understanding this. Makes me wonder if those 90k IRS agents might be a Trojan horse from our side..
My speculation is that the IRS is being staffed and weaponized to be the private army for DC. With all my heart, hope that I am wrong.
