Very interesting information. I'm not in contact with my Ultra Liberal sister, but I'd love to have more of our family tree information that she has.
Our Grandfather worked for the Rockefellers as supervisor of the grooms and my mom was born on their estate in Pocantico Hills in 1933, but I have no idea when he started work there or left employment there. I'm pretty sure my uncle was born on the estate as well and he was 10 years older than my mother.
My grandfather told me that they normally had a hundred or so people working there, but during the depression they hired a lot more people and created make busy work painting and etc... He told me there were 15 or so grooms as they had riding, show, and working horses in those days. My grandfather didn't talk much, but he could braid my sisters hair amazingly. He taught me how to make a hangman's noose, and could use some frightening language when mad, but never spanked us.
In circa 2005 me and both my sisters went to see where our roots were and we stopped at the Sleepy Hollow City Hall to get copies of our birth cert. I was born in North Tarrytown which had been annexed into Sleepy Hollow, the clerk was a bit taken back when she read our mother's maiden name Tompkins and told us our grandfather was a tough man. This was 43 years after my grandparents moved to Florida to retire. I hope Pop wasn't a baddie, he wasn't to us as children. He said the Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep prayer every night.
We are descendants of Daniel D. Tompkins, whom I think was a pretty good sort. I knew the Rockefeller family was bad decades ago when I saw several documentaries on the Robber Barons, and the Miners who were killed when they went on strike.
I didn't have much care for family history until reaching middle age, but my Liberal Sister was quite involved, she did a lot of work for Ancestry dot com in order to get free access.
Here’s the problem with this article and so many others: no citations.
It’s a great write up, but if I were him I would hyperlink every single claim to a place the reader can confirm the claims for himself. If it’s a claim based on speculation or rumor, link us to places and things that offer the greatest evidence for such speculation and rumors. To do all that work and not cite your claims…disappointing. The difference between a fascinating article and a masterpiece right there.
