The "understanding" needs to be brought back as part of mandatory education in every Public School just like it used to be!
We had it in third or fourth grade, then mandatory "American History" class in seventh grade. Then we were offered a choice between American History 2, or World History in eighth grade. (but which ever one you chose you just got stuck with the other one for ninth grade)
Of course all through elementary and Jr. High the class stood, faced the Flag and gave our "Pledge of Allegiance" to the Flag and the USA.
Does not matter how many times people read it, if they dont understand why it was written in the first place :(
eXactly!!

Seems like it was just yesterday.
Don't worry, this time the "understanding" comes from standing at the edge of the precipice and facing the abyss.
Great point.
