If we had a DOJ/FBI/LE that we could trust to investigate this and determine what is going on then the rumors could be dispelled.

But no we have a rag magazine spouting off like they have the authority over such matters.

Since law abiding citizens can't look into it themselves, it's easy for them to hide their crimes.

This article from this source makes it more plausible IMO

The whole 'if you see something say something' was just a ruse to identify what crimes were getting exposed So they can squash them.
