Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment

-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evoloving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
My mom and I both started to eat low carb about two Christmases ago. There was one entire Christmas. We barely ate any sweets because we were just tired of everything.
Cutting back on carbs was a lot easier than I thought. Once I became mindful of what carbs I wanted to put in my body, I made better choices for myself. For instance… I used to eat pop tarts. There’s 38 g of carbs in a pop tart. I haven’t eaten one since. If I’m having 38 carbs, I’m going to make it worth my while. Something hearty and fulfilling, or some thing like chocolate mousse.
We don’t eat bread at all really. Every morning I eat 1/2 of a English muffin, low carb by Thomases. I eat it with bacon and berries. The same thing every day! With coffee. But you can actually get creamer that doesn’t have sugar in it. It’s not the best, but it really helps to start cutting back in all areas.
Any sandwich that you want to eat, you can eat with a low carb tortilla wrap. This really helps cut the carbs out of your diet. You’d be amazed how well any sandwich taste in a wrap it’s fantastic.
The thing that bothers me, the most was not having the sweets, so we started to purchase the Atkins sweets. You just have to experiment to find the ones you like, and also try and find them on sale because they are expensive. The cheapest place I found them is on Amazon.
Another thing is cheese and crackers. You can find crackers that are lower in carbs, and you don’t have to eat 20 of them just 8 maybe. With deli meat and what we call crunchies cut up vegetables it’s delicious. Also black olives you can eat all day long on a low carb diet.
I also do not drink soda pop at all! Maybe once in a while if I have pizza, I’ll have a Coke with it, but we don’t purchase it and we don’t keep it in the house. Just quitting drinking soda pop I lost 10 pounds but that’s another story.
I think, also becoming closer to the Lord, and being in alignment with his will is keeping me from needing to binge on anything - I don’t know how to explain it.
This Christmas has been a little different for me because I am pet sitting, and I have a little bit more free time on my hands. I’ve done a lot of baking and sent cookies to my daughter and my boss and my mom, and also made caramel corn tonight. Somebody on GAW left a recipe. Anyway, it’s delicious. I’ve never had homemade caramel corn - and wow.
When I do want something sweet, I’ll make it myself. It’s healthier that way, and I get to give away lots of sweets so I don’t eat them all.
I hope you find a niche!
I’ve never gone ful keto because I knew I couldn’t keep those numbers. However, the low carb has helped a lot and I don’t feel so bloated or overly full.
That's great to hear! I'm glad you've found a healthier way of eating that is sustainable for you. And getting off of sugar is great! (Of course, that carmel popcorn was a bit on the sugary side, lol.) Yeah, I saw that recipe too and thought it sounded amazing! I've saved it for a special occassion. But you can just use real, heavy cream in your coffee for low carb. It's so rich and satisfying, it's `almost like a dessert. I've been thinking of learning to make crackers, because I just don't like any of the store bought ones. Either they've got weird ingredients, or are too high in calories and carbs, or they're insanely expensive. If you ever come across a good, healthy, reasonably priced cracker, please let me know! Thanks for the info. I'm very pleased for you that it has worked so well for you and your mom.
