I've notice the same in my family. I think it goes back to the culture of the 1950s and 60s, when families would sit around the lone TV set in the house and watch the same program together. The warm fuzzy feelings of family togetherness that they experienced in those moments get rekindled even today when sitting in front of that box.... they watch it for the warm fuzzy feelings more than anything else.
