Agreed. A stalemate is when one side is prevented from moving but you did not capture the king.
If you look like winning you try to avoid a stalemate but if you look like losing you try and force one to save losing so badly.
I have never seen "best" used as a special chess term.
it is if you are analyzing moves after the fact. the computer rates them and "best" is what you want

i think the term is standardized insofar as chess is concerned. whatever the computer would play is "best"
Also, I have actually read a couple chess books a long time ago, and the word best did not have a specialized meaning in anything I read.
